On 3 November 22, at 06.30 pm (in room SE3, Departmental Building, ground floor), we host an invited keynote lecture by
Dr Seán Crosson (NUI Galway) on
"'A New Ireland Rises' as 'Hope and history rhyme': The GAA's centenary commemorations of 1916 and Bloody Sunday 1920"
The event will be opened by words of welcome from the Embassy of Ireland and the Centre for Irish Studies. After the keynote, there will be a musical performance by esteemed musician Shane Ó Fearghail and a drinks reception.
In the winter term 22/23, the department offers a particularly rich teaching programme to celebrate the finale of the Decade of Centenaries 2012-2023, initiated by the Irish Government to commemorate the momentous events of that period (see www.decadeofcentenaries.com/). This winter term is thus a time for celebrating all things Irish, and we are excited to offer courses on Irish culture, literature, and language across our study programmes, e.g. a lecture course on Irish Literature in English (from the medieval to the contemporary period), a seminar on Irish National Cinema and the Celtic Tiger, a course on 21st-Century Irish Fiction, a seminar on Ulysses, 100 Years Later, and a class about feminism in Ireland across the years: from the Easter Rising to Estrogen rising.
