Online discussion: A Female Way? Kamala Harris and Women in U.S. Politics

07.04.2021

Dr. Stefanie Schäfer (Marie-Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fellow 2020-2022, University of Vienna) will be joining the discussion hosted by Amerikazentrum Hamburg and Julius-Leber-Forum on Tuesday, 13 April 2021.

In her victory speech on November 7, 2020, Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris declared, "While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last!" It has now been a little over two months since Harris was officially sworn in as Vice President of the United States. Throughout her career Harris had to overcome adversity and fight for her seat at the table - especially having been the first of her kind in several offices: first female and first African American Attorney General of California, first Indian American Senator, and now first female Vice President of the United States.

But who exactly is this woman who continues to break one glass ceiling after another? Is she representing a whole generation of politically involved women or is her career more of a lucky exception? And what conclusions can we draw from her first two months as Vice President? The American people appear to be more divided than ever before. Will female leaders, such as Kamala Harris, play a key role in reuniting and healing the nation? Is there even such a thing as a truly female way of governance? And what part do the United States First Ladies play in all of this?

These are some of the questions that will be discussed by our distinguished panel of speakers: PD Dr. Stefanie Schäfer (Marie-Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fellow 2020-2022, University of Vienna) and Tasha Cole, board member at Running Start, an organization supporting young women in politics. Moderation: Ericka Bahner Seifried, freelance journalist

We invite you to join and encourage you to take part in the discussion! The discussion will be held in English.
