ESP Module

Teaching English for Specific Purposes

AR "Approaching ESP Texts" will be offered next in W18 and W19.

ESP is an expanding field which opens up new career perspectives for students of English:

  • teaching in business & vocational schools (HAK, HBLA, HTL,... - around 60% of Austrian upper-secondary students attend BHS schools!)
  • adult education
  • occupational fields outside the teaching profession (e.g. journalism, cultural management, marketing, advertising)

AIMS of the module:

  • introduce students to selected content areas
  • enable students to work with ESP texts
  • prepare students for different teaching contexts

The module consists of four courses:

  • Course 1: "English in a Professional Context (EPCO)"
Aim: To introduce students to selected content areas which they are likely to encounter in future ESP teaching, and to equip them with strategies to come to terms with unfamiliar real-world content areas, with an emphasis on analysing and producing relevant text types.
  • Course 2: "Approaching ESP Texts"
Aim: To enable students to work with and analyse ESP texts within an applied linguistics framework (using genre and discourse analysis and drawing on corpus resources) in order to prepare the students to mediate these insights to language and teaching practice.
  • Course 3: "ESP Methodology"
Aim: To introduce students to different ESP teaching contexts (e.g. HAK, HTL, private sector language schools, freelance, adult education etc.) and provide them with the necessary tools and techniques for developing and implementing ESP teaching programmes.
  • Course 4:
Either "English in a Professional Context (EPCO) - Advanced" OR one two-hour course with an ESP focus either offered by the University of Vienna or a similar educational institution.

Registration
If you are planning to do the ESP-Module, please register for the courses you want to attend via U:Space.

Please note also that the ESP Module is intended primarily for students studying for a teaching degree (i.e. UF Englisch) here at the department. These students will therefore be given priority in the allocation of course places, except with regard to those courses that also form part of other programmes (i.e. EPCO for the BA, EPCO Advanced for both MA programmes and AR Approaching texts for the MA in English Language and Linguistics).
MA students or students from other departments should therefore be aware that while they are not excluded from the ESP Module, we cannot guarantee that it will be possible for them to take all four courses within the time of their studies. The chances of completing the module will vary depending on the number of free places on the relevant courses. These can only be determined after the end of the second registration period. Registration for courses that are not part of a student's study programme can thus only take place via the so-called "Restplatzvergabe" (i.e. allocation of remaining course places).

Certification
Successful candidates will receive a university certificate called "Certificate in Teaching English for Specific Purposes" (CerTESP). The issuing of the certificate should be requested by sending the following form to Monika Fahrnberger:
Antrag auf Ausstellung des ESP-Zertifikats. You also need to provide an up-to-date transcript (Sammelzeugnis) as proof that all four courses have been completed; the relevant courses should be highlighted clearly.
