1922 and 1923 were decisive years for Ireland. The period saw the formal transfer of power from Britain to the Provisional Government of Ireland, with the symbolic handover of Dublin Castle on January 16, 1922, and the beginning and end of the Irish Civil war. It also included the publication of Joyce’s Ulysses in 1922 and the Nobel Prize for literature for W.B. Yeats in 1923. The winter term of 22/23 is thus a time for celebrating all things Irish at the English Department, and we are excited to offer courses on Irish culture, literature, and language across our study programmes. We join the finale of the Decade of Centenaries 2012-2023, initiated by the Irish Government (see www.decadeofcentenaries.com/), and hope that students will find the different classes interesting and stimulating.
The Irish Semester at Vienna includes a festive kick-off event at the department on November 3, 2022, at 6:30pm (SER 3), with a keynote lecture by Dr. Seán Crosson (NUI Galway) on “‘A New Ireland Rises’ as ‘Hope and history rhyme’: The GAA’s centenary commemorations of 1916 and Bloody Sunday 1920” as well as Irish music and lots of craic.
