This special issue aims to push the study of women’s biopics in new directions by considering the genre as a dynamic and malleable frame that shapes women’s life narratives in multiply contingent ways. It brings together a cross-disciplinary ensemble of eleven articles looking at a diverse range of cinematic and televisual biopics from France, Great Britain, Sri Lanka, United States, Austria, and the Iranian diaspora, which lend themselves to critique from an intersectional gender perspective.

Julia Lajta-Novak is a tenure-track professor for Anglophone Literature and Mediality at the University of Vienna.

Eugenie Theuer is a Cultural Studies and Film Studies scholar and curator at the University of Glasgow.
