First Circular

The conference will follow the format of previous conferences: only plenary (and no parallel) sessions. It will start on mid- morning on Wednesday 19th February 2020 and will run until the late afternoon of Friday 21st February 2020. The venue will be the Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik, Universität Wien (Hof 8.3, AAKH Campus). The room is well equipped with computing and data as well as audio-/video projection equipment.

Academic Programme

After a second call for papers, there are currently 23 20-minute paper presentations plus a short poster session. The abstracts have been peer-reviewed. All named presenters should be familiar from previous NPIE conferences.

Social Programme

There will receptions on the Wednesday and Thursday evenings. On the Thursday, there will be a recital of Irish Songs in English by the Ensemble, a subgroup of EnChoir, the student choir of the Department of English and American Studies at the University of Vienna.

The Irish connection with Vienna will be further developed by a couple of talks by Dieter Fuchs and by Diarmuid Ó Riain, and there will be a short walking tour.

Conference Fee

Apart from some subsidy for the conference by Prof. Kirk's Professur, efforts to obtain further funding have unfortunately not proven successful. There will thus be a conference fee of EUR 100,00 per participant to help cover basic costs. Included will be refreshments during breaks, first-thing coffee, lunches, plus the costs of the social program as well as student assistance. Evening meals, however, and accommodation are not included.

There are two ways to pay the fee: by bank transfer (details upon request), or by cash at registration. Unfortunately, credit card payments are not possible.

Accommodation

Vienna is awash with accommodation, of every type and at every price. The closest hotel to the department is the Hotel REGINA. Beside it, there is the Hotel Pension Baron am Schottentor. Each is used by the university. Both are available on www.booking.com - or directly. The department is near the UBahn/Straßenbahn station Schottentor. Happy to answer any queries or advise if desired.

All correspondence or other communications should be made directly with John Kirk preferably by email john.kirk@univie.ac.at or by landline +43 (0)1 4277 42427 or mobile +43 (0)660 574 3421. We are all greatly looking forward to seeing you in Vienna in February!
