In 1994 Waldemar Zacharasiewicz became a Corresponding Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and served on its Committee for Literary Scholarship. In 2000 he was elected to Full Membership of the Academy. In 2010 he was elected to membership of Academia Europea, and in 2014 to the Royal Society of Canada as a Foreign Fellow.

He has organized three international symposia in the field of American literature in Vienna and has also coordinated three international conferences on Canadian culture. From 1998 to February 2014 he was Director of the Canadian Studies Center at the University of Vienna.

Since July 2012 he has been the chair of the Commission on "The North Atlantic Triangle: Social and Cultural Exchange in Europe, the USA and Canada" of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. In this capacity, he has convened three international conferences and symposia in Vienna.
