On June 8th, we celebrated Barbara Seidlhofer as the winner of the Wilhelm Hartel-Award- the highest prize offered by the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
The jury explained its choice by emphasizing Barbara Seidlhofer's contribution to founding a new field - the study of English as a lingua franca - and the risks this involved at a time when English linguistics meant studying "the native speakers' English".
